Beyond Greenwashing: What ‘Clean’ Really Means in Fashion

In recent years, the fashion industry has aggressively marketed itself as “eco-friendly,” “sustainable,” and “green.” These terms conjure images of a healthier planet and cleaner choices for consumers—but the truth is often far murkier. Many brands engage in greenwashing, using vague or misleading environmental claims to convince consumers that their products are safer and more sustainable than they really are.

While eco-friendly initiatives—such as using recycled plastic fabrics or reducing water waste in production—may sound positive, they don’t necessarily translate to clothing that is safe to wear. In fact, many so-called "sustainable" garments still expose wearers to toxic chemicals.

The Hidden Dangers of “Eco-Friendly” Clothing

One of the biggest misconceptions in sustainable fashion is that recycled or plant-based materials automatically mean a product is free from harmful substances. Here’s why that isn’t always true:

  • Recycled Plastics in Clothing: Many brands tout the use of recycled polyester (rPET), often made from discarded water bottles. While this reduces waste, it doesn’t eliminate the risk of chemical exposure. Studies have shown that microplastics and chemical residues from recycled plastics can leach endocrine-disrupting chemicals (like BPA) onto the skin, where they may be absorbed into the body over time through transdermal absorption.

  • PFAS in Activewear: Many moisture-wicking and stain-resistant fabrics—including those labeled as "sustainable"—contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as forever chemicals because they don’t break down in the environment or human body. A recent study revealed PFAS were found in leggings and sports bras from major brands, despite their “green” branding. (Source: Environmental Health News)

  • Chemical Treatments in Natural Fibers: Even garments made from seemingly safe materials like organic cotton or bamboo can be treated with toxic dyes, flame retardants, and antimicrobial finishes that contain formaldehyde, phthalates, and heavy metals. Some bamboo fabrics undergo a chemical-intensive process to become rayon or viscose, stripping away any natural benefits.

Certified Clean Clothing: A Truly Safer Choice

At Vibrant Body Company, we take a different approach: Certified Clean First Layer. Rather than relying on marketing buzzwords, we ensure our products are tested and certified by a third-party organization, OEKO-TEX®.

Unlike vague eco-friendly claims, OEKO-TEX® certification guarantees that textiles are free from harmful levels of over 100 toxic substances, including:
✔ PFAS & heavy metals
✔ Formaldehyde & toxic dyes
✔ Pesticide residues
✔ Phthalates & endocrine disruptors

Why It Matters for Your Health

Most people don’t think about skin absorption when choosing clothing, but the skin is the body’s largest organ—and what you wear can directly impact your health.

  • Sweat & Friction Increase Absorption: When you sweat or experience prolonged friction (like during a workout), your skin becomes more permeable, allowing chemicals from clothing to enter your body more easily.

  • Clothing is Worn for Hours—Every Day: Unlike single-use plastic, which you might briefly touch, clothing sits on your skin for hours. Over time, exposure to toxic residues and synthetic chemicals can build up in your system.

  • Chemical Exposure Can Have Long-Term Effects: Studies link PFAS, phthalates, and formaldehyde in clothing to hormonal disruptions, reproductive issues, allergies, and even cancer. (Source: Green Science Policy Institute)

The Future of Fashion: Transparency & Safety

As awareness grows, the demand for truly safe and transparent clothing is increasing. Choosing Certified Clean over vague “eco-friendly” claims is a proactive way to protect both your health and the planet. At Vibrant Body Company, we believe that what goes on your body is just as important as what goes in it—which is why we are committed to non-toxic, third-party-tested garments.

Greenwashing may fool the eye, but Certified Clean protects what really matters—your well-being.
